Social Media and Haiti

A widget I created for Crisis Camp activists to share updates from victims of the Haitian earthquake and aid agencies on the ground. Crisis Camps were set up nationwide to develop tech and social media tools for Haitian relief efforts.

People in Haiti were directed to text their location and medical needs. These texts were entered into a database, where volunteers translated them from Kreyol into English. The location coordinates of the person sending the text message were then overlayed onto a map on

This widget collects the updates of those text messages. I made the widget for the purposes of raising awareness about the situation on the ground and for activists and relief workers to post on their websites.
